How to Keep Your Cool Without Expanding Your Carbon Footprint

Now that summer is almost here, it’s time to consider how to stay cool while still doing our part for the planet. Luckily, we at Vastola Heating & Cooling have plenty of suggestions to help you do just that. They range from major investments to minor tweaks you can make whenever you need to.

And without further ado, here they are!

Invest in new equipment.

This is obviously the most expensive option upfront, but if you’re serious about reducing your carbon footprint, it’ll pay dividends far into the future. And if your old equipment is nearing the end of its lifespan, it just makes sense to invest in a green option. There are some new Carrier air conditioners and Mitsubishi air conditioners on the market that deliver fantastic energy savings, so be sure to call us to learn more about your options. You can also completely switch the type of system you have, changing from a traditional HVAC system to a geothermal cooling and heating system.

Is your air conditioning equipment efficient and in good shape? Consider getting home solar panels. The times when you most need your air conditioning – sweltering, sunny summer days – are when your solar panels will be most efficient, making this a win-win for you and the environment.

Get HVAC service before the cooling season starts.

A well-maintained system is an efficient system, giving you those cool breezes without using more energy than you have to. More importantly, HVAC service can catch small problems before they become big ones. Since one of the biggest warning signs of a broken air conditioner is spiking energy bills, having your system serviced can help you save energy and money.

Use your thermostat wisely.

If everyone is at work or school during the hottest part of the day, should you be spending the money to keep your home at a perfect 72 degrees? Programming your thermostat to let the temperature creep up when no one is at home can help you reduce your energy consumption without sacrificing any comfort. However, some caution is warranted. If you have pets at home, you want to keep things cool enough so that they will be comfortable. Also, don’t let the temperature go up too high. Your system will just have to work harder to cool the place down when everyone comes home.

Throw some shade (into the room).

Using the blinds and shades you already have is a great way to save energy over the summer. Close any south-facing blinds and shades during the day, especially if no one will be at home to need the light. Keeping the light out will keep your home from taking on heat during the warmest hours of the day. Your air conditioner won’t have to work as hard to keep your home cool and comfortable.

Turn on the fan.

Fans use less energy than air conditioners, but they help us to stay cool by circulating air around the room. If you have a ceiling fan, make sure the blades are turning in the right direction (usually counterclockwise in summer) before you leave the fan on for extended periods of time. And feel free to stand right in front of or below a fan if you want to cool down quickly!

At Vastola Heating & Cooling, we are here to help you stay cool without using more energy than is necessary or spending a fortune. If we can help you by providing more efficient equipment or air conditioning repair or service, let us know! Remember, we’ll be here all summer long.
